Bret Stephens asked Can Environmentalist Think (subscription required)? He is not sanguine given the explosion and environmental disaster at Lac Megatic, Quebec. Economic thinking is about tradeoffs, butter for guns and all that. The environmentalists that oppose pipelines may have a thought process but it is not about tradeoffs. The tradeoff at Lac Megatic is pipeline (safer, cheaper, friendly to the environment) versus trains of oil that are not. The pipeline opponents think but not economically. They want to stop fossil fuels. Making the transportation safer, cheaper, and more friendly to the environment is not a positive for them. They can think but they don’t think economically. We need more folks like Bjorn Lomborg who is capable of making sense of both sides of the environmental debate.
