Kathleen Parker opens an interesting topic today by asking: What was Bill Clinton thinking when he met with Attorney General Loretta Lynch who will decide if Herself will be indicted. Kathleen posits what seems to be a silly opinion of conscious Bill:
But of course Bill Clinton wants his wife to become president of the United States and make history as the nation’s first female commander in chief.
Why, he’d be pleased as punch and proud as proud can be.
Plus, it would be tons of fun to return to the White House as the first husband. Bill would throw on an apron and start baking cookies so fast, Annie Leibovitz wouldn’t have time to wipe her lenses.
Then she starts to worry about unconscious Bill. Let’s take conscious Bill and Herself as president seriously. What does he want? There are at least three things:
- Young females
- His legacy (it is not great but at least it is mixed)
- His wealth and influence (especially through the Clinton Foundation)
How will Herself becoming president impact those? And why did he talk with Loretta Lynch on the plane?
We don’t see that Herself becoming president will be a problem with the first bullet. Herself will be busy and he will have more star power.
The second two are what Bill is worried about. He knows that she put all kinds of pressure on his presidency circa 1993 and helped to elect a Republican Congress. He is best situated to know if she could be an adequate president. He might think that he needs to stop Herself or he might know that an indictment is possible and made Loretta an offer. He knows it looks bad but he knows from his history that he can get away with it. He always has in the past.
The wealth and influence make it likely that he made Loretta an offer. An indictment might be worse for him than a failed presidency. It also throws down a marker with the press. They need to spin this one for Bill and Herself.
We think that it is most likely Clinton business at the usual level of corruption. They can and do get away with it. Look for Loretta to keep her job or even move up. There is a small chance that Bill wants to stop her or Loretta will show some integrity. We would advise small bets and long odds if you think that.
